Featured Author Friday

This week's Featured Authors Friday is PJ Schnyder and Jae Lynne Davies.  Both of these ladies are simply amazing and super nice!  I had the chance to meet them both this past August in New Orleans at AAD they both were incredibly humble and friendly; all despite me being in complete awe of them all week and gushing about everything(so thanks for not slapping me around). 

I had the pleasure of reading PJs Drowning Tides prior to meeting her, so I felt a little prepared.  Although her outfits blew me out of the water; I stand in awe, of not just her but all of the attendees who dressed up during the convention; those ladies hold nothing back and frankly if there was a best-dressed contest for the whole convention I'd hate to be the one to decide who wins 'cause everyone goes all out.  Ms. Jae Lynne is an absolute pleasure to be around, I didn't even realize who she was at first (I just thought she was another awesome book lover)...  I'm not sure where I got the impression that authors were these horrible devias who wouldn't want to me, the star-struck-fan (I blame Hollywood and movies like Devil Wears Prada) so frankly I was a little nervous about meeting them all. However, both of these women (and everyone else) absolutely rocked and chatted with me like they were one of my buddies (I recall a conversation about "strip club etiquette" with them while we were prepping some convention bags)...

AAD 2014 hopefuls... Please read.

So I was looking at the 2014 Intent list, this is a list of authors that are hopeful to be featured for 2014, and wow the list is long... extremely long. Sadly we wont be able to accept everyone. Here are the reasons behind it:

1. Your publisher is in no way involved with AAD and wont be. This will happen several times because several pubs either have flat out decided NOT to work with us or they just dont care. Publisher participation is a must, as small press authors do not have the ability to provide the promo and goodies on the scale we ask for, and often the publishers help with books and or promo. No publisher means no help, means we take a HUGE chance that the author can provide. We just cant do that.

2. Newbie Author. LOVELY that you wanna get out there and promote, but 99% of all newbie authors are not ready for the way we do everything, nor the promo and and goodies we ask them to provide. We encourage newbie authors to attend, and give out promo, but until they have more of a following and ability to provide for the readers, we usually dont accept them as FA (Exception to the rule: NY Debut author OR an author that is a debut that has the backing of their publisher by way of freebies and or a party)

3. Self Published authors that do not meet the AAD criteria.

4. Online antics and persona. If we know you are a trouble maker, diva, or have issues with others, and its been made public, we strongly consider the author and how they would fit into the event. AAD is very cohesive, and we strive to make sure it s a mostly drama free zone.

5. In person antics and person. Just because you have been a FA at AAD before doesn't grandfather you in. AAD looks at everyone's attitudes, personality, How they deal with the public and the staff and most importantly, the attendees. 3 complaints from readers, and Authors are off the FA list for good.

So thats just a taste of what we do when we consider an author for FA spot. I can tell you that 2014 will have 50% of all authors being NEW to AAD in general, which is awesome! Authors for 2014 will start hearing in the new year, so they have time to get their act together and come up with awesome goodies, parties and events to make the readers squee!

Featured Author Friday (#FAF)

Guess what today is! Anyone???

 Today starts what we are calling Featured Author Friday.  Are you asking yourself what Featured Author Friday is?  Featured Author Friday, or #FAF as I will be tagging it on twitter, is a feature we will be posting weekly between now and next summer’s convention in Savannah, GA.  Every Friday we are going to be highlighting two to three of the Featured Authors that will be in attendance in Savannah.  We are going to highlight each of the author’s works, giving the run down on what these talented authors have done already, as well as new & upcoming releases, in addition to where you can find them!  (Unfortunately for you all you will be exposed to my not-always-politically-correct humor that comes free of charge!)

Hopefully thru these posts you will discover some new-to-you authors that you will fall in love with (not the creepy-stalker kind; the good “die-hard-fan” kind) at least that is what I’m shooting for…  I really hope that you all will weigh in with comments, when we post about an author that you are a fan of, and recommend your favorite book by that author to others (and share these posts with your friends~seriously, we are easy~pimp us out!).  For interviews with the authors, follow our twitter, as we will be tweeting the bloggers when they have the authors on their sites as guests; in fact you should follow the bloggers as well~cause they are awesome (and they host lots of giveaways|read: they give free stuff away & everyone loves free!|).

Mistress of Ceremonies MaryJanice Davidson

About: MaryJanice aka MJ an amazing author who at several times in her career has ended up on the USA Today and the New York Times lists, and most importantly she happens to be the Mistress of Ceremonies for AAD Savannah next summer.  Prior to writing she was a model and medical test subject… She lives in MN with her family and dogs (as if she wasn’t cool enough; she is a dog person to boot. Stella & Audra Price

About:  Stella is the founder and genius creator of the Author’s After Dark Convention; she also happens to be a fabulous writer, amongst a graphic/cover artist for Tease Publishing! DO NOT tell my staff that YOU have a room already when you haven't registered. That's not possible as you CAN'T get a room for the dates without registering. So THAT'S A LIE.

For your agent to tell me that YOU attending as an attendee is insulting, means that the scores of other authors that are attending just as attendee clearly have an issue. NOTHING makes you better then them, just like NOTHING makes the FA's better then them. If I could have everyone, I would be in order to keep a good mix, we have to cap things. And we have been capped for over a month now.

And Agents: PLEASE do not tell me the other authors you have on your agency that ARE already Featured Authors will be pulling out. For you to take your toys and go home because ONE author on your roster didn't make the cut (and WASN'T invited because we don't invite anyone, nor has your author EVER been emailed by me--- and with AAD I'm the only one that makes decisions) is not only negligent to those other authors but down right stupid. AAD is a wonderful way to reach readers and promote, but you already know that or you wouldn't be trying so hard to get the lone author in. for them to miss it because of ONE person with sour grapes would, if I were in their shoes, piss me off. 

If the authors do pull out, they will be missed, but they will open up spots for the authors that are playing by the rules to attend as featured. This is how AAD works.

AAD has over 55 authors on wait list right now, and no amount of your agent, publicist or Editor calling me will get you in. WE ARE FULL UP AND YOU WERE NEVER INVITED BECAUSE AAD DOESN'T INVITE PEOPLE. In order to be fair to everyone, we take people off the wait list as they got on it.

All having your agent call me does is ensure I will NEVER have you attend the con because you are difficult. I don't make a dime off this con. I owe them and you nothing, and neither does this con. PLEASE do not expect me to just hang the rules because someone with "clout" called me. they do not have clout with me. AAD has integrity, and AAD and I have always upheld the rules we have in place, regardless of what people have tried to push me to do.

Thanks all. I realize that this is total drama, but I feel nipping it in the bud early will ensure minimal dust ups in the future for the con. I understand everyone is REALLY excited about the con, and attending, and Savannah is extremely excited to have us, So things are going to get a little wild. Know that I always have the best of intentions and in order for us to keep operating at the level you have come to expect to bring you awesome goodies, parties and books! 

And BTW, AAD is 50% full and the parties we have planned are INSANE! More on it soon!
