In historical literature it was called "la fée verte", the "green fairy" by the French, but it's more commonly known as Absinthe. 

While the spirit originated in Switzerland, it's popularity as an alcoholic drink was achieved on the heels of French artists and writers, which helped the opposition strive to ban its consumption.  Even though it did not contain the hallucinogenic properties reported to possess, the United States took it off the shelves by 1915, but 2007 saw it once again legal.
